- A handrail height between 34 inches and 38 inches above the surface of the stair tread, ramp, or decking
- Ability of the handrail to be grasped with one hand, with a diameter of at least 1 1/4 inches and no more than 2 inches or a perimeter dimension of at least 4 inches and no more than 6 1/4 inches
- Space between the handrail and the wall, or surface next to it, of at least 1 1/2 inches
- Continuous handrails for the full length of the stairs, parallel to the stairway
